Picture News
At Styal Primary School, we use Picture News to help children explore current events and develop an understanding of the world around them. Through engaging stories, thought-provoking images and discussion questions, pupils are encouraged to share their opinions, listen to different perspectives and ask questions about important issues affecting individuals, communities and the wider world. These discussions provide valuable opportunities to explore the protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act 2010, promoting understanding, respect and inclusion while challenging stereotypes and discrimination. Children learn that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with dignity, regardless of their differences.
Picture News also supports our teaching of British Values and personal development. Through discussion and debate, pupils develop their understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. They learn to express their views respectfully, consider alternative opinions and recognise their responsibilities as members of a community. By exploring real-life issues in an age-appropriate way, we aim to nurture curious, compassionate and thoughtful young people who are confident in their own beliefs, respectful of others and prepared to make a positive contribution to society.
